In Birmingham, there are 8 grammar schools.

These schools are state schools and do not charge fees.

The examination is now set by GL Assessment

This examination includes:

English

Verbal Reasoning

Mathematics

Non verbal/spatial reasoning

The examination format is always subject to change; solid literacy skills in all areas remain important.

Registration for the Grammar Schools exam usually opens in May

The closing date for registering for the test is in June.

It is not possible to register for the test after this time.

Parents receive their child's 11+ test score by mid October allowing an informed decision to be made on preference choices, which are due by 31 October at the latest.

Last entry score refers to the last score offered on offer day in March; waiting lists may have moved after that.

The pass scores can decrease by up to 2-8 points as children from the waiting list are offered places.

Independent Schools

There are several selective Independent Schools (fee paying) in and around Birmingham.

These include Solihull, Bromsgrove, Warwick, King's Worcester and King's High (Warwick).

Some of our pupils choose to attend King Edward's School and King Edward's High School, in Edgbaston, for their 11+ place, and every year a number receive scholarships and/or assisted places (see our results).

The independent schools can provide academic/ music scholarships to children, and fee assistance to children who have performed well and are financially eligible.

11+ application deadline for 2025 entry: Monday 23 September 2024 at 12 noon

Entrance exam: Friday 4 October 2024 for KEHS and Saturday 5 October 2024 for KEHS

Stratford Upon Avon Grammar School for Girls

Alcester Grammar (co-ed)

These schools have an inner and an outer  'priority area' of around  13 and 17 miles radius from Stratford upon Avon clock tower. 

This map shows the priority area. Only KES Stratford use the inner area. 

Stratford Grammar for Girls and Alcester Grammar's 2022 admissions policy only use the outer area.

If you live near the boundary of either of these, is advisable to check with Warwickshire Admissions whether you reside in the area or not.

Walsall

The examination is now set by GL Assessment and will be the same exam/ same date as the Birmingham Grammars.
Entry is offered based on examination results and not linked to location/catchment.

The previous scores for this examination appear higher because it was a 'three-way' CEM system with children being allocated a third of the marks for Maths, a third for VR and a third for NVR. Therefore the overall average was 300.

Queen Mary's Grammar School (boys)
